Pasta casserole with meat

Here's a tasty Pasta Casserole with Meat recipe that is both comforting and easy to make:

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz (340g) pasta (penne, ziti, or any tubular pasta)
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups marinara or tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 cup ricotta or cottage cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a large casserole or baking dish with a little olive oil or butter.

  2. Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  3. Cook the meat: While the pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.

  4. Brown the meat: Add the ground beef or sausage to the pan. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and basil. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

  5. Add the sauce: Stir in the marinara sauce and diced tomatoes. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to combine the flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

  6. Assemble the casserole:

    • In the greased baking dish, spread a layer of cooked pasta.
    • Add half of the meat sauce over the pasta, spreading it evenly.
    • Spoon dollops of ricotta or cottage cheese on top of the sauce.
    • Add another layer of pasta and the rest of the meat sauce.
  7. Top with cheese: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the casserole.

  8. Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the top is slightly golden.

  9. Garnish and serve: Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil if desired.

Serve:

This pasta casserole is perfect with a green salad or garlic bread on the side. Enjoy your hearty and delicious meal!
